My Top 7 Digital Tools for Effective Writing

Ever wondered if copywriters are those grammar gurus who never miss a comma or misplace a semicolon? Spoiler alert: We’re not!  But we know how to work with words and use the best digital tools to deliver not only super effective but also correct texts.

In today’s age, you don’t need a huge budget or fancy degree to make great content. Thanks to some fantastic tools available at our fingertips, the playing field has been leveled.

Let me walk you through a few free(ish) tools that I use all the time to make, shape, and perfect:

1. Google Docs: My Lifesaver

So, starting with Google Docs – this one is so obvious, that it almost slipped my mind. Google Docs is a cloud-based document editor. I remember this one time, I was traveling, and a client needed a last-minute change. I had no laptop, just my phone, and yet, Google Docs came to my rescue. So I tweaked the content in the phone app, and the client was thrilled.

Its auto-save feature is a godsend (if you ever lost all your writing because you didn’t click the save button, you know what I’m talking about), and the ability to share and collaborate with clients makes it an essential tool in my kit.

2. Grammarly: The Grammar Guru

Next up, Grammarly. As someone who isn’t a native English speaker, Grammarly is for me a safety net that catches every potential slip. This tool has saved me from many a ‘chicken’ that was supposed to be a ‘check-in’.

It makes sure my copy is grammatically sound and stylistically polished, whether I need to write my texts in American or British English.

3. ChatGPT: The Idea Factory

Now, onto ChatGPT, probably the most spelled and popular AI tool of this day. And for a good reason. This tool is like a brainstorming buddy, always ready with new angles and super quick research.

I’ve created my own custom prompt database, tailored to my specific needs, which speeds up my process and brings me closer to my goals in the blink of an eye.

4. Cockatoo: The Transcription Magician

Simply put, Cockatoo turns spoken words into text. The accuracy is insane, especially with English including accents. Czech isn’t as perfect but still does the job.

It’s particularly useful in interviews. Now, I can focus more on the conversation and less on frantic note-taking. I just hit record, and later get a transcript in seconds. Combining it with ChatGPT, I can effortlessly summarize briefs, write follow-up emails, create video subtitles – you name it.

5. Hemingway App: My Clarity Checker

Did you know that the most efficient copy is written at a 4th-grade level? And that the 2005 study by Daniel M. Oppenheimer found that using unnecessarily complex language can make the writer seem less intelligent and less credible to the reader.

It’s easy to get lost in complex sentences and jargon, especially when you’re passionate about a topic. The Hemingway App points out when sentences are too long or words too fancy, making my message accessible and engaging.

6. Emojipedia: The Emoji Expert

Emojipedia is an online database and search engine for all emojis, explaining their meanings and usage. I mean, who knew there were so many smiley faces – and a few that left me scratching my head!

Over time I’ve selected some favorites I keep using, but sometimes I want to mix it up. Emojipedia helps me find just the right emoji to add a bit of fun and personality to my texts.

7. Headline Analyzer: The Title Enhancer

Creating catchy headlines is an art, and it’s hard for me to admit as a copywriter, but this has been one of the toughest skills to acquire.

Headline Analyzer is here to turn the daunting task of headline writing into a more manageable one. It evaluates and scores them based on various factors to maximize impact and engagement.

Conclusion

So there you have it – my little toolbox of digital wonders. They help me work faster and make my writing better. But remember, while they’re great, nothing beats the human touch in storytelling and brand building.
