Journey to Success: Kačí Kočí’s Inspiring Story of Building Czechopedia

Ever found yourself smiling and nodding in a Czech conversation without really understanding? You’re not alone, and that’s exactly what inspired Prague-native Kačí Kočí to create Czechopedia, a fun, educational platform exploring Czech culture and language.

Kačí’s journey started not with formal teaching methods but from a personal challenge. “Even after several years of learning English, I couldn’t express myself in the same way as I could in Czech,” she remembers. “I thought it might be easier to teach my English-speaking friends Czech.”

This led to a simple but brilliant idea. “It all began as a Google document for a friend, full of Czech slang and phrases.” When Kačí shared this on Instagram, it unexpectedly caught fire, attracting a wide audience and setting the stage for Czechopedia. “It was a fantastic surprise that fueled my passion.”

As more people joined in, Czechopedia grew from just a personal idea to a thriving cultural hub.

Embracing Challenges and Celebrating Milestones

A pivotal moment for Czechopedia came from a seemingly small yet significant Instagram milestone. “When I had around 60 followers, I considered it an incredible success,” Kačí shares. “I know this number is really small for most people, but I was absolutely thrilled, and at that moment, I thought, Hey, this could actually turn into something!

However, transitioning Czechopedia into a business brought its own set of challenges. “I’m not a consistent or disciplined person, so sticking to a long-term plan is always a pain for me. The occasional lack of feedback and engagement from followers can also be a bit demotivating when I start to doubt myself. Is there even interest? Does it make sense to do this? Does it really help anyone?”

“And then comes one message that negates all these doubts, proving that if it genuinely helps at least one person, but hopefully more, it’s absolutely worth it! And I love this part about what I am doing.”

The Female Entrepreneurial Experience

Kačí’s experience as a woman in business opened her eyes to the special qualities of female entrepreneurship. “On social media, I often observe entrepreneurs trying to publicly undermine or ridicule competition. Some people, mostly men, just focus on finding mistakes and give unpleasant and unsolicited criticism. It’s unpleasant and toxic, even for an observer.”

“That’s why I’m glad there are exclusively women’s groups on social media, where such behavior is almost non-existent. There’s a sense of mutual support and community among women in business, even extending into friendships. What I seek in such groups is understanding, and constructive criticism that includes genuine advice on how to improve – not just random hate.”

Guidance for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

Reflecting on her journey, Kačí shares the ups and downs she faced while bringing Czechopedia to life, “Navigating this project has been like riding a rollercoaster, pushing me out of my comfort zone and bringing fresh experiences into my life.”

She remembers herself rapidly adapting and learning while launching her very first product, “It’s really interesting to see what a person can encounter during such a process— let alone the fact that you suddenly have to learn the basics of about five professions at once,” she says.

“Finding your unique approach is a journey that may not lead to success on your first try. You’ll have to address various questions, aligning your efforts with your personal values and needs. It takes time, and the key is to be kind to yourself.”

Czech Yourself Before You Wreck Yourself

Czechopedia is now a hub for more than just language learning; it’s a cultural connection, offering humor and inclusivity. Kačí’s latest e-book, Czech Yourself Before You Wreck Yourself, is a perfect example. Full of fun phrases and insights into Czech life, it’s great for anyone looking to connect with the local culture in Prague.
