How to Make the Best Out of Life in Prague with Nicolas

When it comes to navigating life in Prague, Nicolas is an excellent person to ask. The French freelancer has called Prague home for over a decade. From working with children to pursuing his artistic passions, Nicolas has made a life for himself in the Czech capital and is happy to share some of his tips and experiences with you.

“I was born in Poitiers, a medium-sized town in France. I grew up in a village just next to that town. Later, I studied and worked in Poitiers before moving to Prague.” He decided to make the move in 2010 and has been embracing the city’s unique culture ever since.

Nicolas currently splits his time between working at the Lycée Français de Prague, where he leads extracurricular activities for children aged 6-10, and working with League 5 Academy, where they organize holiday camps for kids.

He also indulges in his artistic side, acting in theater productions and participating in movie and advertising shoots. You may recognize him from his recent appearance as one of the faces of T-Mobile TV’s commercial campaign.

Making Friends and Finding Community in Prague

“At first, when you’re new in town,” Nicolas reminisces, “you meet new people every day, whether at work, in pubs, or during sports activities and trips. I really got to know a lot of people in the span of the first few months.”

As time went on, things started to settle down when Nicolas build closer connections. “Now, I have several different groups of friends that don’t necessarily know each other. I’ll meet up with some of them for concerts or to play music, while others I’ll go to sports events or hiking with.”

“But I also make sure to stay in touch with my friends back in France. I visit them when I go there, and four of us make a point to meet up once a year in a different European country.” It’s clear that Nicolas has made a diverse range of relationships since moving to Prague and values the importance of maintaining those.

Balancing Life and Finances in Prague

When it comes to spending money, Nicolas is not one to splurge on material things. “I buy second-hand clothes and I’m satisfied with basic food. I don’t have a car or a TV, but I do spend all my money on leisure time,” he shares.

“I travel a lot, and I like to go to concerts, meet up with friends at pubs and restaurants, and play music. I never had the ambition to earn more and more money. I’m just trying to spend it wisely and be happy with what I have.”

Finding Purpose and Fulfillment in Prague

“When it comes to meaningful things in my life, I like to divide them into three categories,” Nicolas says. “First, there are the things I do for myself. That’s mainly playing music and doing sports. It’s a way for me to escape the daily routine.”

“Secondly, there are the things I do with others,” he continues. “Being far from my family, I try to visit them as often as possible. It takes a bit of energy, time and money, but I always do it with pleasure.”

“Lastly, there are the things I do for others. In my work with children, I always try to give them a fun and educational experience. I especially enjoy having discussions with them because they are always full of surprises.”

“Once a year, I also help out at a charity market in Prague 2, where all the proceeds go to an association called Fandi Mámám that helps single mothers.”

“And since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, I’ve been volunteering with an organization Šatník Praha that helps refugees by providing them with everyday essentials. I give them things I don’t use anymore, or collect donations from friends and even take usable items from the street.”

It’s small actions like these that make a big difference in someone’s life.

Exploring Prague: Nicolas Recommends

Finally, when asked about a place he would recommend to other Praguers, Nicolas highlighted the area of Slatiny, in Prague 10. A place that locals often don’t know about, but he thinks is definitely worth a visit for anyone interested in the city’s history.

“It’s a former slum,” he explains. “In the 1920s many workers came to Prague without the assurance of actually finding work. Several slums began to emerge around Prague before being swallowed up by the city’s expansion. However, Slatiny still exists today, just a stone’s throw away from the Slavia football stadium. It’s a completely different world, with houses almost in their original state, made of steel sheets, wood, or stone.”
