How to Make the Best Out of Life in Prague with Pietro Mazzoni

Born in Bulgaria, adopted by Italian parents, and raised in Luxembourg – Pietro Mazzoni ‘s life has been a whirlwind international adventure. Now 28, this self-proclaimed “Italian citizen of the world” calls Prague home, where he’s traded hospitality for a satisfying career in accounting, delighting jokingly in the fact that numbers “don’t scream and shout when they are not satisfied with something.”

Having lived in numerous countries, including the Netherlands, Italy, Luxembourg, and Hungary, Pietro acknowledges the challenges he faced as an expat in Hungary. “Unfortunately, Hungary has become a very difficult place to live with a Hungarian salary, and I didn’t feel welcome as a foreigner. I was kind of surprised when I saw how different Czechia was. Maybe some people will say that Czechs are also not so welcoming and nice, but I think that these people should go to Hungary and see how it is there.”

Determined to settle down and eventually start a family, Pietro plans to stay in Prague for the long haul. In our candid interview, he shares his experiences of finding happiness, purpose, and belonging in the Czech capital. Discover his insights on making friends, balancing life and money, and exploring the city.

Making Friends and Finding Community in Prague

Despite living on the outskirts of Prague and having a mostly work-from-home job since December 2022, Pietro has begun to find his footing in the city. “I am in touch with some artists who are also expats, and I had a chance to hang out with some of them in Žižkov. People seem to be open-minded, I don’t struggle to talk to people, and I don’t feel some kind of awkwardness that I felt in other countries.”

Reflecting on his interactions with locals, Pietro shares heartwarming advice for anyone looking to find community and belonging in Prague. “Recently, I lost my cat and my first approach was to go and look for him without seeking much help. However, I asked my landlord if she knew any Facebook group of the neighborhood, and the response from the local community has been amazing.” The support he received – messages from strangers and the eventual safe return of his cat – made him feel incredibly welcome.

Pietro’s advice for those seeking community and belonging in the city is clear: “Don’t be afraid and simply talk to people. Their response will positively surprise you,” he smiles. He also suggests sharing your interests with others, either in person or through online groups. In doing so, you’ll find people in similar situations who are eager to connect over shared passions. Embrace the kindness and open-mindedness of the people in Prague, and you’ll find the sense of community you desire.

Balancing Life and Money in Prague

Cortelazzi

Aside from forming connections with others, Pietro also shares his insights on achieving a balanced lifestyle in the city and it begins with a touch of indulgence. “As an Italian, I like to spend money on good Italian food and wine,” he confesses with a grin. He’s discovered a favorite spot near the airport called Cortelazzi, where he happily fills his car trunk with quality products. However, he acknowledges that if he had an office job, he might need to cut back on food expenses.

Pietro’s advice for those seeking to balance finances and life enjoyment in Prague is simple: be resourceful and stay informed. “Like in many other countries, there are passes and discounts for a sheer amount of things or activities. If you live in Prague and work here, ask HR to list all the benefits you can receive with your job,” he suggests.

The Multisport card, for example, is an incredible tool that opens doors to a wide range of activities, from gyms and swimming pools to ski slopes and more. “If you don’t have a Multisport card but you would like to do daily activities, be ready to spend a lot of money,” he warns.

Curiosity and a willingness to explore are essential to finding balance in the city. Pietro encourages newcomers to venture beyond their comfort zones: “When living in a city, try out different places, explore other areas, and compare prices. And once again, don’t be afraid to ask!” By staying informed, asking questions, and seeking out the best deals, you can effortlessly weave a sense of enjoyment into your budget-conscious life in Prague.

Finding Purpose and Fulfillment in Prague

With a balanced lifestyle in mind, Pietro also delves into finding purpose and fulfillment during his time in Prague. “Working is already quite meaningful. Outside of my job, I strive for a well-rounded lifestyle that includes both fun and self-improvement,” he says. His interests span from playing video games and guitar to reading, walking, sports, and meditation. And he cherishes the time he spends with his girlfriend, who works in an office most of the week.

As for an activity he would recommend to fellow Praguers, he enthusiastically suggests exploring the city on foot. “Going for walks both within and outside of the city is time well spent. Prague is full of hidden gems and surprises, so wherever you go, you’ll always find something new to discover.”

He encourages others to delve into the city’s pubs, metro stations, sights, and various neighborhoods. “Prague is a safe city and there is nothing better than going to places that are not so touristic because you can feel the locality much more,” he explains. To make the most of these adventures, Pietro offers one last tip with a wink: “Take a camera with you.”

Exploring Prague: Pietro Mazzoni Recommends

Pietro’s enthusiasm for exploring the city has led him to discover some fantastic locations, which he is eager to recommend to fellow Praguers. One area he particularly loves is the historic Prague 6 district located behind Prague Castle. “There is a lot of history, especially about the monasteries, in which you can buy and drink their homemade beer, but also beautiful nature, landscapes, and nice restaurants,” he says with enthusiasm. For those with a penchant for arts and an open-minded attitude, Pietro suggests venturing to Prague 7 and 3. “If you’re a bit of an open-minded person who can look beyond judgment and are into arts, you’ll find there very much like-minded people,” he advises.
