How to Make the Best Out of Life in Prague with Geoff Tyson
From jamming with gypsies to managing a successful music club in the Prague center, Geoff Tyson ‘s journey to finding his rhythm in the city is nothing short of extraordinary. The multifaceted maestro left sunny California for the enchanting city of Prague in 2007, and has since immersed himself in the city’s vibrant arts scene.
As a guitar player, singer, composer, and audio engineer, Geoff has dipped his toes into everything from releasing major label albums to writing songs for Disney films.
“I’ve been a touring musician, written songs for video games, MTV, and many Television shows and commercials, I produce music for other bands, and I work as a recording studio and live sound engineer. Since I’ve been living in Prague, I’ve gotten into voice acting for video games and TV commercials, on-camera acting.“
But with all these accomplishments under his belt, his favorite gig remains singing silly songs to his dog. Let’s tune in to Geoff’s life and learn how he’s made Prague the stage for his next great adventure.
Making Friends and Finding Community in Prague
Diving into Prague’s thriving art scene, Geoff discovered the city’s diverse and welcoming communities, often just by accident. His open-mindedness and willingness to explore new experiences led him to forge strong connections with fellow artists and creators.
“When I first arrived, I’d take my guitar to a tiny club in the center to jam with gypsies. In this tiny, stinky bar, we’d chain-smoke, drink cheap beer, and turn old disco classics into acid jazz improv jams, trading solos, switching instruments, and having an amazing time. This was my first introduction to the music community here and I made my first friends that way.”
Whether it’s a film, acting, language studies, dancing, entrepreneurship, or simply enjoying a drink with like-minded people, Geoff found that Prague has something for everyone. His advice to newcomers looking to find their tribe in the city is straightforward:
“A good first step is to not be a cunt. Prague is a small town and gossip travels quickly. I have found expats here that couldn’t recognize that social customs are different here than in their home countries. They couldn’t see that their struggles were self-imposed. Then whatever interest you may have, there will be a community here that does that thing.”
Embracing the uniqueness of Prague’s communities and respecting local customs has been key to Geoff’s success in finding friendship and belonging in the city.
Balancing Life and Money in Prague
“I was thinking about hosting a seminar where people come to hear all my financial tips, techniques, and wealth tricks. Then they would be advised that by doing the exact opposite, their financial security would be ensured. I’m sure that I’d somehow lose money on that venture as well,” Geoff laughs.
When all the essentials, such as food and rent, are covered, he invests in experiences and nurtures the local artistic community, always keeping an eye out for unique opportunities to earn and grow. Geoff’s key to balancing finances and life enjoyment is to align passions with income sources.
“Getting a side gig attached to your hobbies or social scene can be very rewarding. I was asked to mix sound for a friend’s live band many years ago, drawing from my mixing experience in the recording studio, and found that I really enjoy doing it and am apparently quite good at it. So now I’m able to supplement my income while being a part of the music scene I’d be at socially anyways. It’s a win-win.”
By tapping into Prague’s vibrant creative world, Geoff discovered the secret to harmonizing work, play, and passion.
Finding Purpose and Fulfillment in Prague
Geoff’s always up for exploring new avenues to find purpose and fulfillment in Prague. Whether it’s solo sports, impromptu trips, or sharing a drink with new friends, he finds excitement in the unexpected.
“I like long-distance running in nature,” he shares, “There are many well-maintained parks here, and a quick tram ride will take you out to Divoká Šárka with hills, swimming, and bees and shit. I’m also quite impulsive and known for hopping on the train to random destinations to explore.”
One such adventure led him to hitchhike through Moldova to Ukraine, where he found himself on the beach in Odessa, sharing drinks with a famous Ukrainian band. “The craft beer there was fantastic.” And the secret to these incredible experiences? Geoff believes in embracing the moment and being open to whatever comes his way.
“There are so many interesting activities in Prague: live theaters, street festivals, farmers markets, music festivals, art galleries, and lots of cute doggies to pet everywhere. The advice I gave my one friend who had a lot of social troubles was to make eye contact, smile, and let the moment take you wherever it goes. Don’t try to orchestrate everything but be open to what might happen if you just say ‘yes’.”
By saying “yes” to life, Geoff has uncovered the essence of living fully and authentically in Prague.
