Prague Explorer: Czech Movies at Kino Aero, Wellness in a Mall, and More
What are some great, lesser-known Prague places, people, and activities? Let’s discover Prague together! In the past weeks, I collected some ideas that you need to check out, including Czech movies at kino Aero, wellness in a mall, and more.
Czech Movies at Kino Aero
Have you ever wondered how bizarre some (almost all) Czech films are? As a native Czech, it often doesn’t even occur to me. But a visit to a screening from the Some Like it Czech series at Kino Aero was a great reminder of that.
Two lovers of Czech film have launched a project that presents one of the treasures of Czech cinema with English subtitles each month. The film experience deepens the introductory stand-up, putting the film in a cultural and historical context. Prague expats and their Czech friends can then properly understand and appreciate all the bizarreness.
We went to Postřižiny, “Cutting It Short”. The beer from the film brewery flowed at the Aero bar. We were soaking it in before the screening, together with the knowledge from the short comedy scene. The movie was cuckoo, as expected. And still on the wave of Postřižinské beer, we could discuss our film experiences at the bar and plan our next visit.
“We started our project in the autumn of 2021, so 2022 is the first year we are in full swing,” say the founders of Some Like It Czech. “Since we are still in our humble beginnings and have been hosting screenings in our spare time, our main goal is to just keep the ball rolling and maintain good quality.”
“We are excited about our programming schedule because we have so many gems hidden up our sleeves. In the autumn, we plan to show the audience the cool vibe of the 90s in the Czech Republic, the glamour of the 30s in Czechoslovakia and the euphoria of the Velvet Revolution. At Christmas, we want to treat the expat community with an evergreen, which is played on every Czech TV station on Christmas Eve. Let’s see if you can guess what films we want to screen,” the founders stimulate our curiosity. Go check it for yourself 😉

Sweat it out
“I like to go to the sauna,” Heidi replied when I asked Prague Actually readers what helps them stay in good mental and physical health when it’s cold outside. Good tip, I thought. It also came to my mind a few times, but I was afraid to go there alone. Naked. Maybe Heid’s comment was a sign that I should try it. Anyway, I noticed that across the street, in the Krakov shopping center, the Czech wellness network Saunia opened its branch.
In addition, their websites offered me my first visit for free. The universe couldn’t be more straightforward. I have trouble transitioning to the weekend mindset on Friday after the home office. So I chose this day for the sauna to draw a line after the workweek. I checked that I didn’t really need to bring anything with me and headed across the street.
“Hello, I’m here for the first time,” I announced myself at the front desk. Thanks to that, together with a towel, sheets, and a chip, I got instructions for how it all works. Washed and wrapped in sheets, I flashed around the bar. Although I was extremely curious about what and how the others were doing here – so I could do the same – the desire to win the competition for as little eye contact as possible prevailed.
Warmth hugged me when I opened the door leading to the Finnish sauna. I hopped on the wooden bench, and my stress suddenly began to melt into the sheets. In a few minutes, I exchanged the hellish heat for an arctic shower. Then I took a break with Birell and repeated it twice more. After three hours, I floated toward home with the feeling of a newborn. And sauna has become a Friday ritual.
“Saunia is a company that has the potential to become a European leader in its field. We feel that shopping centres are gradually being transformed from purely shopping zones into centres of entertainment and leisure activities, and Saunia is exactly the concept that fits into this strategy,” comments the investor Dušan Šenkypl.

“Creativity Starts On Paper”
I fumbled in a gift bag and pulled out a red pocket notebook. An elastic band secured its pages and had a tiny pencil tucked into it. “That’s cute,” I gave my boss feedback on his Christmas present. “It’s from Papelote, a small design stationery store. They make everything in the Czech Republic and in a sustainable way,” Marek explained.
“Red” became my new interview buddy. Whenever I prepared for one, I wrote all my questions and notes there. Somehow, I felt really legit when I flashed Red at an interview. Another advantage was that it put people at greater ease than when I glanced for clues on my phone.
I also scribbled all kinds of doodles in Red and put aside various thoughts and to-do lists. After two years, it completely filled it. “I need a new buddy!” I immersed myself in Papelote’s collections on their website. A few days later, I picked up my new pocket buddy Yellow from the Papelote’s store at Milady Horákové.
“This year, we would like to highlight the planned cooperation with Knihobot or the planned expansion of the opening hours in Papelote 2,” Papelote shares their hottest initiatives for this year – don’t miss them.

Doula – the perfect solution for millennial parents-to-be
“Doula is a woman…” Zuzka pauses, “That’s not sexism. But men just don’t do it,” she adds with a smile. “Doula is a woman who mentally supports another woman who wants to get pregnant, is pregnant, or in the puerperium.”
Millennials are taking advantage of doulas’ assistance more and more. It provides them with exceptional care during pregnancy, childbirth, and after birth. A doula offers support in unfamiliar situations, a source of information to make better decisions, and the opportunity to focus on beautiful moments of pregnancy without unnecessary worries.
However, the function of doulas is still often unclear or misunderstood. So a doula, Zuzka Sokolova, dispels the biggest myths and tells us what lies behind this profession. But first: how and why does a woman choose such an occupation?
