Veggies Directly from a Farmer – Why and Where to Get Them in Prague
Although it’s still not as easy and convenient as going to our closest supermarket, getting our hands on fresh, delicious, locally grown farmer’s veggies in Prague is becoming increasingly easier. When it comes down to it, all we need is a bit of inspiration to try it. Let me share with you what were my reasons to join KPZ (community supported agriculture) and how I think you could benefit from giving it a shot.
The 10 main reasons why I joined and stayed in KPZ Bohnice
- The produce is fresh, seasonal… and also healthy and nutritious. Oh how I love to sniff the beautiful, freshly picked veggies.
- It tastes amazing! I’m a city girl; I was stunned by the huge difference. The fruit and veggies taste so much better than the supermarket stuff.
- Transparency. I know where my food comes from, who grew it and how. (It sounds as if I like to have stuff under control…)
- Knowing my farmer. I know him personally and can directly communicate with him, give suggestions, visit the farm etc. (Mmm, talking about control again…)
- Affordable price. Besides knowing exactly what I’m investing my money into (stop with the control already!), thanks to the fact that there is no middle man, the prices are great.
- Sense of community. It’s an opportunity to meet some of my neighbors and feel more connected with my neighborhood. It’s not like I meet them over a beer in my free time (yet), but I’m glad to know that they are out there.
- Supporting the local economy. Nothing makes me feel better than getting up in the morning and going to support the local economy :P… (I know, this argument is rather unsexy but it does make a difference and so it makes my list.)
- Eco-friendly. Small, organic farms are often more concerned with the quality of the landscape and animal welfare. Transporting food over shorter distances and basically zero packaging saves energy and mineral resources. (Oh, so there’s no way I can make this one sound sexy either…)
- Learning. I love to open my bag of veggies, hold a vegetable in my hand for the very first time and think, “What the fuck do I do with this?” Since I’ve become a member, I’ve found out about the existence of all sorts of cool, intimidating veggies.
- Creativity. I gotta work with what I got in my mystery basket and I enjoy the challenge (fans of Chopped… Anybody?).
