The Biggest Prague Lockdown Changes – 1. How to Find the Equilibrium?

All of us have been affected by the Prague lockdown on some level. Some of us stay put and work from the relative comfort of our homes, while others have faced life-changing and upsetting situations. But what we all have in common is the amount of change we had to face in a very short time.

I thought I had effective tools to keep both my physical and mental health in good shape. But not even all the prevention in the world could prepare us for what came our way. I want to share my 6 biggest changes caused by the Prague lockdown, how I dealt with them, and some tips which you can try too. Each topic has its blog post in the mini-series of Prague lockdown. This time we focus on:

How to Find the Equilibrium?

People find change quite difficult. It’s not about expecting yourself to go from 0 to 100 in one day. Don’t be hard on yourself if you’re finding it difficult to get back into a routine.

Nicky Lidbetter, CEO of Anxiety UK, a charity that supports people with mental health conditions

“Wake up, fall out of bed, drag a comb across my head…” Go to the office, meet friends after work, or head out to a restaurant to have dinner with my boyfriend, Alex. We could all say goodbye to our routines. I work from home now. I’m grateful for that. But how to adopt a new routine? I had no idea.

When the first Prague lockdown arrived, I was suddenly overwhelmed by information on how to wash my hands, how much toilet paper I should buy, and how to stay effective at my job. Am I doing it right? I meditated three times a day just to feel somewhat centered. And in the end, the best advice I could take was to cut myself some slack.

I took my time to experiment with activities that I had to do, those that made me exhilarated and those that relaxed me. Eventually, I found my equilibrium, a routine that makes me feel both productive and satisfied.

It consists of getting up early to write and no more than three achievable personal goals I work towards each day. In addition, I find time every day for meditating, dancing, playing ukulele, learning Spanish, and reading a book. Even if it’s just for five minutes. I always have that sort of time and I usually end up going much longer, simply because these things make me happy.

TIPS:

1.Strike a balance between having a routine and making sure each day has some variety and gives you the flexibility to improvise.

2.Set yourself realistic goals that you can complete and feel successful about.

3.Take time to relax and seek pleasant distractions – books, movies, games, music…

4.And cut yourself some slack if it doesn’t work perfectly all the time.
