Learning New Skills – Inspiration of the Month
Last month we played games together, and this month I want to open the topic of learning new skills. Enjoy the summary of what happened on the blog in July and let me suggest 3 August action tips, you can try right now.
Interview of the Month: Maarten Crefcoeur
“I try to make my lessons as memorable as possible,” says Maarten. “Like with guitar, for instance, having names for different chord shapes, so it’s easier to remember.”
“Oh, like in Friends, right? There was an iceberg and old lady…” I’m making shapes with my fingers and showing them to Maarten.
“Ah, I didn’t know the old lady,” he makes a quick assesment. “I usually use pizza and building, and building with a person outside” Maarten makes me laugh hard. “I tell, especially kids, silly stories about dinosaurs and picking up pizzas next door… It’s an easy way for them to remember what’s going on…”
In my last interview I sat with Maarten Crefcoeur, music graduate from Holland, who teaches music to Prague expats. He talks about his passion for music and about his music lessons.
Tip #1: Contact Maarten and book a lesson
If you’ve always wanted to learn how to play guitar or piano or improve your skills, then talk to Maarten to find the most fitting type of lesson for you.
If you’re interested in the online music theory masterclasses, there will be a set of sessions starting on the 24th of August.

Opening Topic: Learning New Skills
This month I decided that I will finally learn how to play a music instrument and I’m sharing my process in the blog post.
Tip #3: Learn a New Skill and Share
Years ago I saw this inspiring Ted Talk and forgot about it. But now it popped up in my YouTube feed again. A sign from a devine presence or the big brother analyzing my browsing data? We’ll never be sure. The bottom line is that it set in motion a series of actions.
The premise of the video is – it takes 20 hours of studying to aquire a decent knowledge of any skill. Challenge accepted, I’ve decided after watching it. Twelve days till I’m leaving to Spain to meet for the first time the family of my boyfriend, if I study Spanish an hour and half each day, I should be close to have a “decent knowledge” of the language. Right now, I’m in Galicia, putting theory to the test and will keep you updated 😉
And I want to share the video with you and most importantly, hear about your experience:
- Write me about the things you would like to learn
- Write me what it took for you to learn something
- Let your voice become part of my next video – send me a recording of you saying what you would like to learn/or how you learned something
Send a message to my Facebook Page
